In a series that the SDSU softball team needed to win, Summit League-leading Western Illinois swept the Jacks in a three-game series in Brookings.
The Jacks (9-36, 6-12) were held to one hit and two runs in game one in a 7-2 loss. WIU pitcher Kamren Ferguson had her 33 2/3 innings without an earned run streak snapped when Ashley Durazo singled to center for the Jacks only hit to score Brooke Postma from second.
In game two, Dani Broshar singled down the right field line to score Brooke Postma, tying the game at one in the bottom of the fourth. WIU would take the lead with a run in the sixth and would add three more in the seventh to win 5-1.
The Westerwinds (25-17, 15-2) would complete the sweep on Saturday with a 10-0 shutout in five innings. Ferguson would allow five hits and has given up only one earned one in her last 40 innings pitched.
SDSU is 3 ½ games back of Southern Utah (21-28, 11-10) for fourth place and a spot in the season-ending Summit League tournament. The task will be especially difficult since the Jacks' six remaining conference games are at second-place North Dakota State (28-16, 15-3) on April 28 and April 29. The Jacks lost both games on April 28 by the scores of 5-0 and 3-2.
A Bison series win would all but close the door on the Jacks' chances of going to Macomb, Ill. for the conference tournament. The Jacks have lost seven of the last eight meetings with NDSU including losing 12 of their last 13 games in Fargo dating back to 1996.
The Jacks will play at home against Dakota State on April 30 at 4 p.m. before the final regular season series will take place May 1 with a double-header against Oakland (Mich.) starting at 3 p.m. with a single game on May 2 at noon. The Golden Grizzlies (19-27, 9-11) won two or three games last season in the first-ever softball meeting between the two schools.
