The new SDSU Jackrabbit logo design was unveiled at 10 a.m. on Feb. 19 at the Student Union on campus.

"South Dakota State University is adapting to the world around it, and this contemporary mascot is a reflection of that environment," said SDSU President David Chicoine.

"We feel confident [students and alumni] will be pleased by the distinguished, bold design that will bring an even greater appreciation of the fine institution they attended," Alumni Director Matt Fuks said.

Spearfish natives Craig and Cory Whitlock of Mongoose Graphics in Denver, Colo., created the new mascot design. Tony Horning of Chanhassen, Minn, produced the word-mark design of the Jacks with the distinctive ear and tail.

It cost more than i want to know, but this is much better design than the first attempts.

I'll miss the goofy jack but maybe we appreciate this one more because the last attempts were such fluffy bunny/dog beasts. (Continued…)

Yes! This is what the logo should have been from the start.

Scary bunny...

Are they sure this rabbit doesn't have rabies or using steroids of some sort?

DOes this also mean the mascot (the guy in the bunny costume) will change as well? or will we continue to use that mascot? Can't imagine how you transform this type of design into a costume like that. (Continued…)

I really like it! Much better than the others we saw. The ears coming off the J is very creative, too.

Not bad, not bad at all. I agree this is much better than the first go-round. And I don't hate it like I thought I would (aren't preconceptions terrible!). (Continued…)

I like it--intimidating, but not scary. It should put us on a par with other schools in the Summit League and the Gateway Conference.
It does seem to me that the one with just the head is looking backward, not forward, but then, I'm right-handed. (Continued…)

re: rabbit looking backwards . . .

Well, you know that there's ROTC on campus . . . soldiers and airmen need to always remember to "check six."

That's where we can see other critters like bison and coyotes . (Continued…)
