Even though the effort was better than two nights ago in a win at Centenary, the SDSU men's basketball team lost at Oral Roberts on Jan. 30, 68-63. An eight-point SDSU first-half lead didn't last long as the Golden Eagles (13-10, 8-3) were up 10 with 6:11 to play.
For the first time since joining the Summit League more than two years ago, the SDSU men's basketball team has swept a conference opponent as the Jacks took care of Centenary (7-15, 2-9) 81-75 in Shreveport, La., on Jan. 28. In the first half, both teams combined for 52 points, while in the second half, each team scored 52 points.
After setting a record they would like to forget against Oral Roberts Jan. 30, the Jackrabbits set one to remember Feb. 1. SDSU (12-9, 8-3) shot 64.7 percent from field-goal range, surpassing a nearly 10-year record of 64.4 percent accomplished in 1990 against Concordia, beating the Centenary Ladies (0-11, 1-21) in Shreveport, La.
The SDSU equestrian team completed a home weekend sweep of Sacred Heart (Conn.) 13-3 and 6-1 in the first competition of 2010. On Jan. 30, sophomore Meredith Sauer scored an 87 in equitation on the flat for MVP honors. Junior Ashley Marrin was the MVP for SDSU with an equitation over fences score of 80.
The SDSU wrestling team lost to the Air Force Falcons 23-12 in their second conference dual of the year Jan. 30 in Frost Arena. SDSU started the dual off on the right foot, as 125 Aaron Pickrel battled Andrew Zwirlein in the night's first match. Pickrel picked up a takedown in less than one minute into the match and maintained a slight lead for the remaining time to take the win 5-4, giving the Jacks an early 3-0 lead.
Another record was added to Jessica Ferley's résumé on Jan. 30, as the SDSU women's swimming and diving team took on the University of South Dakota and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.
Well, it is Super Bowl week, and there is a lot of excitement in the air. Of course there will be plenty of parties on Super Bowl Sunday. Thousands of bags of chips will be eaten. Hundreds of pizzas devoured. There will be too many empty beer and pop cans and bottles to count.
